I don't use Instant Messenger. How do I get started?
Either use your current AIM, Yahoo! Messenger or MSN Messenger account, or sign up for one using the links above. Fill out a quick, easy Web form, choose a screen name, and start using IM in 1-2 minutes.
To use the program, users can download Instant Messenger software onto their home computers or access messenger services from their web browser. Computers in the library have bookmarks to that will link to the IM web services.
How do I IM a librarian?
Open a new message, enter our buddy name, cortlandrefdesk, in the To: field, and start typing your message. Or, just add cortlandrefdesk to your buddy list, double-click on the buddy name to open an IM window, then type your message.
When is Chat Refefence available?
Chat Reference is available when the aim icon is bright yellow

Chat Reference is NOT available when the aim icon is a faded yellow

Will I need to wait to chat with the librarian?
IM questions are taken in a first-come first-served order. Alternatively, you are welcome to email a librarian, call the Reference Desk at (607) 753-2590, or visit the reference desk for assistance.
What are the rules for conduct during the chat session?
Chat reference requires patience and politeness. We ask that you be patient while waiting for a response from the library staff member. If the library staff member is assisting another library user, it may take a few moments before he/she can respond to your question. If you have time constraints, please inform the library staff member. Rudeness and harassment of library staff will not be tolerated. Any behavior deemed rude or harassing will result in termination of the chat session.
What if I use Yahoo! Messenger or MSN Messenger?
No problem. IM the librarian with Yahoo! Messenger and MSN Messenger using the same buddy name, cortlandrefdesk. For Yahoo! Messenger users: Note that librarians will not be able to see Yahoo emoticons or animations or hear sounds.
What about privacy?
The library will save the transcript of your chat session. We will remove any identifying patron information before the data is saved. We will make every effort to protect your privacy. Any information you provide will remain confidential.
