Student Concerns
What's this survey?
- The survey is a chance for you to evaluate how useful you found the CLIP
session and to provide us with feedback so we can improve future CLIP
sessions.
Surveys are anonymous and are not linked to your grade in any way.
I've failed the quiz, what do I do now?
- Contact the Coordinator of Instruction, Dan Harms via email at harmsd@cortland.edu.
I missed the CLIP session in the library, what do I do?
- Check the CLIP Schedule (under the Instruction section of the library's homepage click on CLIP, then click on Schedule of CLIP Classes) and find when the next CLIP session or makeup session is being held that you can attend.
- When you attend a makeup session let the librarian/instructor know your name, professor's name and Composition 101 or 103 section that you are in so s/he can let your professor know what grade you received.
How do I know if I passed?
- Your instructor will be sent a list of the grades within two weeks.
- 14/20 or better is passing for the quiz.
What's the point of doing this?
There are several answers to this question.
- The practical: You need to pass this to pass Composition
class.
You'll know the basics of how to use a library to do research. - The useful: The skills you learn about basic research are ones you
can use in all your classes and even after college.
For example, you could use your research skills to check which cars have the best safety ratings or which car dealers will scam you (check out the Better Business Bureau). - The philosophical: for the love of learning. When you can't afford
the money or time for a class, you can get information from a library--
if you know how to use one.
Why not? Some things we learn don't seem to have a point or use at the time, but later prove helpful. Some don't. It's not always easy to figure out which is which. You might as well learn, that's part of what college is about, or it should be.
Instructor Concerns:
When and how do I schedule my sections' CLIP sessions?
- Contact the Coordinator of Instruction, Dan Harms via email at harmsd@cortland.edu with several possible dates and times for your sections to come to the IRA. Indicate your first and second preferred times/dates. The times will be sent to Sue Bush who handles the IRA Calendar. She will check for schedule conflicts with other classes using the IRA and let me know which times are available. Dan will confirm dates/times with you via email (preferably) or telephone.
- Do not assume you've gotten those dates/times you requested until it has been confirmed via email (or phone).
- The earlier you schedule, the better your chances of getting the dates/times you prefer.
- CLIP sessions should be scheduled fairly early during the research project/assignment segment (rather than a week before or after the paper is due) in order for students to have time to use these research skills and tools.
Who do I contact if I want the CLIP presentation geared to my assignment?
- Please send any specific topics or assignments you would like us to tailor
the CLIP component -- a minimum of two weeks in advance to the
Coordinator of Instruction, Dan Harms via email at harmsd@cortland.edu.
He will pass this information on to the librarian instructing your session.
What's this survey?
- The survey is a chance for you (and your students) to evaluate how useful you found the CLIP session and to provide us with feedback so we can improve future CLIP sessions.
- Both Composition Students and their instructors have the opportunity to fill out evaluations-- there are some additional questions on the instructors' survey.
How do you report grades to me?
- Within 2 weeks of your class meeting in the library for a CLIP session, you will be sent printed forms/lists of students who did not complete the assignment or who failed. At the end of the term you will be sent lists of students who did not complete the assignment or failed it.
Who do I contact about grades?
- The quiz is on a pass/fail basis.
14/20 or better is passing. See the above question for logistics of how the CLIP Coordinator sends grades to you.
What about other bibliographic instruction for my other English classes?
- Contact the Coordinator of Instruction, Dan Harms harmsd@cortland.edu about other bibliographic instruction.
I'd like my students to learn more about the Internet and how to evaluate websites. Do you offer a class on that?
- Contact the Coordinator of Instruction, Dan Harms harmsd@cortland.edu for further information.
