Student FAQ's

How do I know if my instructor has a reserve list?

Your instructor will tell you if they have placed anything on reserve. Your instructor will also give you the password that you will need to access the reserves system.

How do I access something that is on reserve?

For print/hard copy/media reserves, go to the Circulation Desk in the library, locate the appropriate reserve item at the dedicated reserve computers and check out the reserve item(s) you want using your SUNY Cortland ID.

For E-Reserves, access them from the library website by clicking "Find Reserves", then click on the "Find E-Reserves" link.

To view your reserve items using the library catalog:

Note that the computer you are using must have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed to access E-Reserves.

How long can I keep a reserve item?

Most print/hard copy reserve items have a two hour in-library-use only loan period; although some can have a two day loan period (this is something that the instructor decides when they compile their reserve list.) You are charged a late fee if a reserve item is returned late. Fines assessed are $1 per hour for first two hours and 25¢ per hour thereafter, for a maximum fine of $10 per item; $5 plus hourly fine for unauthorized overnight use.

E-Reserves are available on-line 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There are no fines associated with E-Reserves.

How can I print an E-Reserve from a lab on-campus?

You must have your SUNY Cortland ID card to print in any of the on-campus computer labs; it costs 10 cents per page. There is a certain amount of money automatically added to your account at the beginning of each semester, based on the number of credit hours you are registered for. This money is only available by using your ID card, and any left at the end of the semester does not carry over to the next term. You can add money to your card at any time at a machine across from the Circulation Desk.

To print an E-Reserve, you must choose "print" in Adobe Acrobat, not the browser print option. This will bring up a pop-up box asking you to name the item---this is so you can identify your print job when you go to the print station.

After you have named your print job, go to the print station, swipe your SUNY Cortland ID card, choose "printing," click on your print job to highlight it, and click on "print." The E-Reserve item should print, and the cost will be deducted from your account. There are also step-by-step instructions at each print station.

Can I print an E-Reserve from someplace other than an on-campus computer lab?

Yes. You will need internet access and Adobe Acrobat Reader. Choose "print" in Adobe Acrobat, not the browser print option.
