  1. Use encyclopedias and dictionaries to define your topic and familiarize yourself with terminology. Suggested specialized encyclopedias and dictionaries include the following:
    • Dictionary of Sport Science: German, English, French. 1987. Ref./GV/567/W62/1987

  2. Look in the Library Web Catalog to see if the library has any books about your subject. to access the catalog, go to the library homepage (http:library.cortland.edu), select “Catalog,” and enter your subject terms in a keyword search. Some suggested texts which give an overview of the field of exercise physiology and help introduce basic terminology and concepts are listed below:
    • Astrand, Per-Olag. Textbook of Work Physiology: Physiological Basis of Exercise. 1986. QP/301/A67/1986

    • Fox, Edward L. Sports Physiology. 1984. RC/1235/F67/1984
    • Garth, A. Fisher and C. R. Jensen. Scientific Basis of Athletic Conditioning. 1990. RC/1235/J46/1990

    • To look for additional books on exercise physiology, do a subject search using appropriate Library of Congress Subject Headings:

Subject headings for general works about exercise physiology include:
      EXERCISE — PHYSIOLOGICAL ASPECTS
      EXERCISE — PHYSIOLOGICAL EFFECT
      SPORTS — PHYSIOLOGICAL ASPECTS

    • Information might also be found under broader subject headings:
      HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY
      HUMAN MECHANICS
      PHYSIOLOGY
      SPORTS SCIENCES

    • For information about specific topics, look under more specific subject headings:
      AEROBIC EXERCISES
      ANABOLIC STEROIDS — PHYSIOLOGICAL EFFECT
      CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM
      MUSCLE CONTRACTION
      MUSCLE STRENGTH

    • For information about exercise physiology as related to specific sports, look under the sport. For example:
      RUNNING — PHYSIOLOGICAL ASPECTS
      SWIMMING — PHYSIOLOGICAL ASPECTS

  3. Yearbooks, annual reviews, and special bibliographies will provide abstracts, reviews of recent literature, and lengthy bibliographies. Some examples are listed below:

    Yearbooks and Annual Reviews
    • Completed Research in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (annual). Abstr/Indexes/GV/201/C65
    • Exercise and Sports Science Reviews (annual). RC/1200/E94
    • Exercise Physiology: Current Selected Research. QP/301/E97
    • Year Book of Sports Medicine (annual). Ref./RC/1210/Y43
    Bibliography
    • Bartone, John C. Science & Medicine of Sports: With Research Subject Analysis & Bibliography.Ref./RC/1210/B37/1984

  4. Use periodical indexes, including both printed indexes and online databases to find journal and magazine articles about your topic. Suggested indexes and examples of appropriate subject headings to check for each include those listed below.

    Printed Indexes

    • Physical Education Index. Abstr/Indexes/GV/201/P452
      • General Heading: EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY
      • Also, check under specific headings, such as:
        AEROBIC CAPACITY
        ANAEROBIC THRESHOLD
        BODY COMPOSITION
    • Physical Fitness/Sports Medicine. Abstr/Indexes/GV/561/P45 (Material in this index duplicates information found in Index Medicus)
      • General Heading: EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY
      • Also, check under specific headings, such as:
        • BODY COMPOSITION
        • RESPIRATION

    Periodical online databases

    • Sport Discus
Check the Sport Thesaurus for appropriate key words to use in your search.
      • General search:
        • physiology- and exercise-
        • physiology- and sport-
      • More specific search:
        • aerobic-capacity
        • anaerobic-threshold
        • body-composition
        • muscle-metabolism
        • muscle-contraction
      • Search about physiological aspects of a specific sport:
        • swimming- and physiology-running-
        • and physiology
    • ERIC
Check the Thesaurus of ERIC Descriptors for the most appropriate headings.
      • General search: exercise-physiology
      • More specific search:
        • body-composition
        • cardiovascular system
        • muscular-strength
    • Expanded Academic Index and Health Reference Center
Both of these indexes use Library of Congress Subject Headings.
      • General search:
        • exercise- physiological aspects
        • sports - physiological-aspects
      • More specific search:
        • muscle - metabolism
        • muscle - physiological aspects
    • Wilson Select
Use headings such as "exercise" and "physiology"

  5. Once you have identified relevant journal articles by using periodical indexes, check the Periodicals Holdings List (http://library.cortland.edu/periodicals.html) to determine whether the library owns the journals you want. The following list includes some, but certainly not all, of the journals in the library which may contain articles on exercise physiology.
    • American Journal of Physiology
    • Canadian Journal of Applied Sport Sciences
    • International Journal of Sport Nutrition & Exercise Metabolism
    • Journal of Applied Physiology
    • Journal of Physical Education, Recreation and Dance
    • Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport
    • Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness
    • Journal of Sports Sciences
    • Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise
    • NSCA Journal
    • Physician and Sportsmedicine
    • Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport

  6. Doctoral dissertations and masters theses relative to exercise physiology can be found through Sport Discus, which includes citations for all of the dissertation and theses indexed through the University of Oregon's Microform Publications project. Through the Microform Publications Project, graduate dissertations and theses relative to all aspects of sports science and physical education, from colleges and universities throughout the United States, are indexed. The library owns most of the microfiche produced by this service, as well as a printed index to the collection (Microform Publications Bulletin— Abstr/Indexes/GV/201/H424).

Dissertations and theses may also be identified through Dissertation Abstracts and Completed Research in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (Abstr/Indexes/GV/201/C65). Masters' theses completed by SUNY Cortland graduate students can be located in the library's web catalog by an author, title, or subject search.
