The Teaching Materials Center (TMC) is a collection of teaching materials typical of those used in K-12 classrooms. The collection is intended primarily for SUNY Cortland students and faculty, but other interested individuals, including local school teachers and residents, may utilize the collection. The TMC reserves the right to restrict borrowing privileges, if needed, in order to fulfill the center's primary mission: serving the K-12 teaching materials needs of SUNY Cortland students and faculty.
As indicated above, the TMC collection includes a sampling of K-12 instructional materials in a variety of formats, including the following:
- Textbooks -- elementary and secondary textbooks, teacher's editions, workbooks, etc.
- Curriculum Guides -- publications produced by school districts, state education departments and other special curriculum project groups; often include objectives, activities, materials and evaluation methods.
- Media -- videotapes, audiotapes, models, games, posters, etc.
- Children's Literature -- nonfiction, fiction, biographies, big books and picture books.
- Educational Software -- instructional, tutorial, and teacher utility software and multimedia.
- Methods Materials -- print and nonprint materials on how to teach particular subjects and/or lessons.
- Periodicals -- journals, newsletters, and children's magazines.
- Reference Materials -- encyclopedias, dictionaries, yearbooks, etc.
- Giant Materials -- big books, oversized charts, models, etc.
- Uncataloged Materials -- pictures, pamphlets, and transparencies.
- Teaching Materials (K-12) World Wide Web Site -- electronic access to TMC handouts and teaching materials available via the Internet.
Most of Memorial Library's books on education research and theory are not located in the TMC. They are located in the library's main collection.
Suggestions for materials which should be added to the TMC collection are welcomed. The primary criteria for purchasing TMC materials is whether or not they directly support the teacher education curriculum at SUNY Cortland.
The TMC is located in the north wing of the first floor of Memorial Library (
come in the main door and turn left, walk past circulation and the TMC doors are straight ahead). Because of the nature of the materials and corresponding assignments there are numerous group study areas. As such the TMC is not well suited for those desiring quiet study. Patrons desiring quiet study areas should study elsewhere in the library.
The TMC is open for use during all
hours which
the Memorial Library is open. Reference assistance is available on the second floor at the reference desk if there are TMC-related questions.
All materials except for pictures, pamphlets and most transparencies are listed in the online catalog. Some are cataloged according to Library of Congress classification, others are found in special sections such as "easy" and "fiction". Call numbers for TMC items begin with the designation "TMC".
All TMC materials except for Reference, Reserve items and Software may be checked out at the library's main circulation desk. The circulation period is three weeks. You will be asked to provide valid identification. When checking out media you should check the number of items in each container against the contents strip on the container.
SUNY Cortland teaching faculty are encouraged to schedule group library instruction sessions. A map of the TMC is posted near the TMC door. For reference assistance, stop by or call the library's reference desk (607) 753-2590.
