Software Training

The Memorial Library Technology Training Center provides training and individual assistance to faculty and staff. We use technology to create and enhance teaching materials and improve efficiency in performing daily routines. In addition, the Training Center strives to help users become proficient through small group workshops and one-on-one assistance.

A calendar of scheduled workshops, one on one training time slots, and walk-in hours is published on a monthly basis.

Microsoft Office 2007

  • PowerPoint  – PowerPoint is a presentation creation program that allows for integration of text, graphics, and multimedia.  Workshops cover various topics, including; creating a presentation, adding and formatting slides, text, images, and charts/graphs, printing slides, handouts and notes, embedding audio and video into your presentation versus linking to external multimedia sites and files, and converting your narrated PowerPoint into a Podcast for iTunesU or eLearning with the Camastia Studio add-in.  For more advanced users, additional workshop topics include how to change the slide master for creating a custom layout, color scheme, font styles, and backgrounds for your own unique PowerPoint presentation template

  • Outlook  – We currently offer training on Outlook 2007 and the Outlook Web Application (Webmail).  Workshops cover file management, composing an email, creating a signature, managing the calendar and appointments, sending and saving attachments, printing messages and calendars, keeping track of tasks, appointments and meetings, create and add members to distribution lists, organize and filter messages by creating rules and alerts, and how to create multiple email signatures for a single email account.

  • Excel – Excel is the spreadsheet component of the Microsoft Office suite.  During the workshops users become familiar with the new interface and have the opportunity to create simple workbooks and worksheets that will include tables and charts. We will also cover basic formulas, filters and sorting. For more advanced users, workshops topics include adding labels to ranges of cells, calculating across worksheets, as well as using financial, statistical, logical and look up/reference functions.

  • Word – Word is the word processing component of the Microsoft Office suite.  There are several different workshops that cover various topics, including formatting font, changing the margins, adding tab stops, adding a watermark, adding headers and footers, using AutoCorrect and Autotext, enabling the track changes function in word, creating common business diagrams such as organizational charts, flow charts and Venn diagrams, and creating a custom dictionary that contains user generated information that can be distributed to other colleagues, creating a Mail Merge which allows you bulk address letters, envelopes, labels and emails from a list of recipients.

  • Access – Access is the database creation and management application in the Microsoft Office Suite.  Workshops cover very basic Access functions including creating tables, adding and sorting data, creating queries and reports.

  • Publisher – Publisher is the desktop publishing application in the Microsoft Office Suite.  Workshop topics include choosing a layout for signs, newsletters and other publications, inserting and formatting text and images, and choosing themes and color schemes.

iTunesU

What is iTunesU -  iTunes U allows for the distribution of educational multimedia projects, presentations and pdf documents  through an online portable format.  Faculty, staff and students create audio and video based materials which are organized by content area and/or course in the SUNY Cortland iTunes U space.   Users can browse these materials through the iTunes application and subscribe to podcast feeds.  Subscribing to a feed allows for the passive distribution of content.  In other words, once a user subscribes to a Podcast Feed, any new materials added to that podcast are automatically downloaded through the users podcast catcher (like the iTunes application).  Please note, course based materials are generally inaccessible to the public unless requested by the instructor.

The introductory iTunes U workshop covers the basics of working in iTunes such as installing the application, adding content to the library, creating playlists, subscribing to podcasts, and exporting media.

  • Training for Faculty – Training is available for Faculty and Staff in the set up and management of an iTunes U course area as well as in the production of audio or video based podcasts.

  • Class Presentations on iTunes U and Podcast Production -  Instructors can request class presentations by the Web Development and Support Specialist – Loren Leonard on creating podcasts with Garageband, Camtasia Studio, and iMovie. Requests should be made before the start of the semester or as early in the semester as possible.

  • iTunesU Related Workshops

    • Garageband - Garageband trainings includes application basics such as creating tracks, recording and editing audio, adding audio loops and effects, inserting images, and exporting to iTunes.  Additional workshops Learn how to convert your powerpoint slides into images which can then be imported into Garageband for creating an enhanced podcast.  An enhanced podcast is a narrated slideshow that allows for non linear playback.

    •  iMovie - iMovie is the video editing application in the iLife suite.  Workshops cover familiarization with the iMovie interface, importing video, iMovie’s integration with other iLife applications, simple video and audio edits, adding title clips and transitions and producing video for various forms of distribution (iTunesU, YouTube, DVD, etc).

    • Camtasia Studio – Camtasia Studio can be used to enhance your video, still images, and audio with transitions, callouts and other effects to create dynamic audio and video podcasts.  Training will include how to import and edit audio, video and still images, adding transitions and call outs, and how to produce files for distribution through iTunes U.

iLife

  • iMovie – iMovie is the video editing application in the iLife suite.  Workshops cover familiarization with the iMovie interface, importing video, iMovie’s integration with other iLife applications, simple video and audio edits, adding title clips and transitions and producing video for various forms of distribution (iTunesU, YouTube, DVD, etc).

  • iPhoto – iPhoto allows you to organize and categorize you digital photos.  Workshops cover creating albums and smart albums, creating and customizing a photo book, creating slideshows, printing options and other exporting options (for example, creating a movie from your photo book).

  • iTunes – iTunes is Apple’s digital media player and organizer.  It has a built in Podcatcher for subscribing to podcast RSS feeds.  Training includes how to import media, create playlists, subscribe to podcasts and edit metadata for inclusion in iTunes U.

  • iWeb - iWeb is a template driven website design application that is a part of the iLife suite on the Mac platform.  iWeb is integrated with the other iLife applications in that it share a media browser that allows for integration of audio, video and images to your website. No HTML or web design experience necessary!

Photoshop

Photoshop is one of the most widely used graphics editor applications, giving the user an astounding level of image design and manipulation.  The introductory workshops will provide a basic familiarity with the Photoshop interface and an overview of the most commonly used tools and techniques, including working with text, selections and layers. Additional workshops demonstrate simple photo editing techniques such as adjusting image sharpness, color and contrast, and blemish and red eye removal, image file type conversion and creating simple web graphics such as banners and buttons.


Camtasia Studio and Snagit –

Capture your computer screen activity as a video or still images.  With Camtasia Studio and Snagit, You can then do basic editing, add callouts and/or transitions.  Images can be exported directly to Word and videos can be produced in a format suitable for podcasting.


Website

  • Adobe (Macromedia) Dreamweaver – Dreamweaver is a WYSIWYG (pronounced “Wizzy Wig”) HTML editor.  Workshops cover adding and formatting text, changing webpage properties, adding images, adding internal and external links, and building a consistent navigation menu.  Participants will also have an opportunity to set up their web.cortland.edu web space and receive instruction on how to transfer their website files to the server.

  • nVu – nVU is an open source (free) WYSIWYG HTML editor. http://www.nvu.com/ Workshops cover adding and formatting text, changing webpage properties, adding images, adding internal and external links, and building a consistent navigation menu.

  • iWeb - - iWeb is a template driven website design application that is a part of the iLife suite on the Mac platform.  iWeb is integrated with the other iLife applications in that it share a media browser that allows for integration of audio, video and images to your website. No HTML or web design experience necessary!

Windows XP, Windows Vista, Mac OSX

Workshops and one-on-one trainings are available on interface navigation, file management and creating backups.


Classroom Support

Class Presentations/Workshops – The Software Training and Support Specialist is available to provide training for students during class times, on technology skills such as creating podcasts, editing video, creating effective PowerPoint presentations, etc.  Such trainings can be provided in the regularly scheduled classroom or in one of the computer labs in the library, pending lab availability.
