Content Management System

SUNY Cortland has implemented a Content Management System which we will greatly impact the way in which much of the SUNY Cortland Web site is managed.

What is a Content Management System?  A CMS (Content Management System) is a Web application that offers campus community members an simple, efficient and consistent way to create, update, publish and archive information on the Web. The CMS makes it possible for almost anyone to easily manage web content without knowing HTML (hyper-text mark-up language) or programs such as Dreamweaver, GoLive and FrontPage.

Who is using it? Currently, only Web sites on the main campus server (www.cortland.edu) will be utilizing the CMS. This would primarily include departmental, office and program Web sites.

Training workshops and one-on-one training sessions are available to those that are interested. Please contact the Academic Web Development Office to schedule a training session. CMS training workshops will be announced.

Faculty & Staff Pages

Web development and design assistance and training are available to faculty and staff to assist with the creation of personal pages and ePortfolios.

Personal pages are a great way to share information about yourself. Choose the nature of your Web site be it professional and/or personal. Share a syllabus, research interests or results, details from your recent trip to Egypt or photos of your grandkids. The site is yours; our office can help it reflect your vision.

What is an ePortfolio? Essentially, an ePortfolio is nothing more than a Web site with the specific purpose of highlighting required professional attributes. ePortfolios are a great tool for faculty organizing their work when seeking reappointment.

Dreamweaver is the primary software utilized for building faculty and staff pages. However, other (less costly but arguably less effective) software such as nVu or iWeb can be utilized.  Please consult the campus supported software list or contact our office before using any Web development software to ensure that we will be able to assist you.

Faculty and Staff who would like their own Web site for personal or professional use can sign up for Web space here: http://facultyweb.cortland.edu

Blogs and Wikis

Blogs and Wikis not only allow information to be shared and expressed but also allow others to participate and contribute in the development of knowledge and understanding via the web. Assistance is available for faculty interested in developing a blog or wiki for themselves or their classes.

Online Surveys

The Academic Web Development Office offers training for the use of Select Survey, an online web application that allows users to easily make and distribute online surveys. Select Survey also generates easy to read reports and can export data into very usable formats such as Excel and SPSS. Contact our office to get started.

Classroom Support

Classroom support is also available for faculty who wish to include a web development component within their student’s coursework. Our office can provide your students with brief training and an overview of Web development best practices during class time to help them begin to understand how the Web works. These requests must be made well in advance. Student support for web projects and work outside of the classroom is available through the library technology interns.
