Dare to Read with Suzanne Bloom
Categories: Events
Mark your calendars for April 15, 2008 at 1:15 PM and 2:50 PM. Suzanne Bloom, noted author and illustrator, will be presenting in the Children’s Reading Area in the Teaching Materials Center, Memorial Library in conjunction with The Big Read. Her theme will center on “Dare to Read: The act of reading to a child creates a powerful connection between the reader and the child and between the child and a larger world.” Ms. Bloom was an illustrator before she became a writer. She notes, “..as much as I love writing the story, drawing the pictures is like dessert.” She went to Cooper Union College, an art school, where she painted, made sculptures, and drew throughout her four years there. She uses everyday details in her illustrations and lets the reader get to know who lives in each of her books. Some of her books include A Family for Jamie: An Adoption Story, Girls A to Z, No Place for a Pig, The Bus for Us, A Splendid Friend Indeed, and Treasure.
Stop in at the Children’s Reading Area for a lively, energizing visit with Suzanne. You will be glad you did!
Sponsored by the Friends of the Library in conjunction with The Big Read.

Stapler Research Project
Categories: New Services
Memorial Library will be conducting an intensive quantitative study of reactions of fear, horror, and terror in response to the new stapler at the reference desk. Funded by a grant from the Department of Defense, assessment will occur over a period of six months at the library reference desk. Data will be collected via a comprehensive survey of library users and by analysis of closed-circuit television using the Dartfish software package. The findings will be crucial for the experimental weapons program for the Army’s Psychological Warfare unit, which will establish whether staplers equipped with extension cords should be parachuted into hot zones to demoralize the enemy.
Thank you for your cooperation,
Mr. April Fool

Banned Books are back at SUNY Cortland!
Categories: Events General News Library News
Ever wonder why anyone would not let people read The Bible? Why would someone think Where’s Waldo is a bad book? What is wrong with Beloved? The Friends of the Library invite you to check out the Banned Books displays in The College Store, Corey Union, Old Main, and Memorial Library from Wednesday, September 26 through Monday, October 8 to see how familiar literature has been and continues to be censored on a regular basis. Contest entry forms at each display will test your knowledge to see how much you know about the books on display!
Participants who complete the contest forms are eligible to win one of two $25 ASC gift cards, a Cortaca Jug sweatshirt or T-shirt, or a Banned Book tote bag filled with lots of goodies inside. The contest is open to students, staff and faculty, limit one entry per person per display. The drawing for the prizes will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, October 10 in the Memorial Library Teaching Materials Center. One winner per display will be drawn for all correct entries received. You do not need to be present to win.
Please contact Lorraine Melita at ext. 4009 or Gretchen Douglas at ext. 4029 with any questions you may have. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.
