Safe Assign - new plagiarism tool available
Categories: Events New Services
Safe Assign is the new plagiarism tool that has been adopted by the campus and is a free add-on to eLearning (Blackboard/WebCT).
There are two different ways to use Safe Assign. You can create a Safe-Assignment where the student themselves would upload their papers before handing it in to you OR you can create a Direct Submit area and submit on an as-needed basis. If you are familiar with how to add a content link to the eLearning course content page, I have attached directions for you to look over.
Please note: If you do not regularly use eLearning and just want to use it for the Safe Assign feature, this can be done!!! (Students can be denied access to the room so there is no confusion that you will be using eLearning for your class)
Training sessions for all levels of users will be held as follows:
Tuesday, January 27, 2009, 10:30–11:30, 12:00–1:00 & 1:30–2:30
Wednesday, January 28, 2009, 9:00–10:00 & 11:30–12:30
(You only need to attend 1 one-hour session – Additional training will be scheduled later in the semester)
Please email Sue.Bush@cortland.edu to reserve a spot. These sessions will be held in the Technology Training Center located in the Learning Commons.

eLearning Walk-In Days
Categories: Events Tips
Who: All eLearning Faculty
What: Walk-in Assistance with eLearning
Where: Technology Training Center (TTC), Library
When: December 15, 16 & 17 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM
Why: It has been brought to my attention that faculty would like to have the opportunity to work on their eLearning rooms and have assistance available “just in case.” The TTC offers us the use of several PC work stations as well as two MAC work areas.
Come for 5 minutes, come for the day….it’s up to you!!
No need to register….there will be a sign in sheet when you arrive.
Please NOTE: This is not meant to be substituted for a New User training session. If you would like to meet with me to get started using eLearning please email me and we will set-up a time that is convenient.
If this is successful I would like to do this again before the spring semester starts…so if you cannot make it this time PELASE let me know that you are interested in one in January. (Either the 13th to the 15th OR the 19th and 20th)
Thank you!

New York State Library and the New York Public Library
Categories: Tips
Memorial Library has many great databases – but did you know you can get more for free?
The New York State Library and the New York Public Library can help you with your research. A card can get you access to thousands of articles from your home or office, saving you time and gas.
Databases available: Project Muse, AnthroSource, Sanborn Maps, Proquest Historical Newspapers (including the New York Times), Civil War: A Newspaper Perspective, and more. Check here for a list of databases, and here for a list of journals.
Get a card: Write nyslcirc@mail.nysed.gov and ask for a state employee borrower’s card. An application will be mailed to you. Send it back with a photocopied pay stub and a copy of your Cortland ID.
New York Public Library
Databases available: Columbia Granger’s World of Poetry, African American History Online, Chinese E-Journal Collection, and more here
Get a card: Any NY resident or student is eligible. Start on their website here. Under the picture of the “Branch Libraries – Circulating Collections” card, click on “Apply for a library card”.
Don’t forget to ask a librarian at Memorial Library if you need any help with your research!
